Scope: Be Free 2 Pee for Equality

Scope is encouraging as many people as possible to take part in a ‘Big Night Out’ on Friday 1 October 2004 as part of its ‘Free2Pee’ campaign, which highlights the problems disabled people have accessing toilets when enjoying a night out.16/07/2004

This date marks the final stage of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), part three, which states that service providers must make reasonable physical adjustments to restaurants, pubs and bingo halls to allow disabled people access.

There are 10 million disabled people in the UK, who have a combined spending power of almost £50 billion a year and who enjoy visiting new restaurants and going to the theatre just as much as their non-disabled peers. Part three of the DDA should make a dramatic difference to the everyday things that most people take for granted – such as being ‘Free2Pee'!

Scope is asking participants to visit their usual haunts, plus a few unfamiliar places on the ‘Big Night Out' and complete a short access survey about each one. Whether participants decide to visit a restaurant, cinema or bar, they shouldn't forget that being able to use a toilet is a basic human right – and thanks to the DDA, it's soon to be a legal one, too.

Scope has launched a website – www.free2pee.org.uk– to provide participants with more details and suggestions of where to visit. The site will also provide information to businesses and service providers who are keen to learn how they can comply with the Act and take steps to improve access to their venue.
