Grandparent's Day Card Competition

Grandparent's Day Card Competition

Grandchildren across the UK can show how much they adore their grandparents by designing a special card to mark Grandparent's Day.

In the competition organised by Age Concern, six regional winners will be short-listed and a national winner announced in the run up to Grandparent's Day 2006 on 23 September. Each will win a top prize of a digital camera and Digital Image Suite software.

All winners will have their cards displayed on Age Concern's Website, where members of the public will get the chance to vote for their favourite card to decide the overall winner. Winners will be asked to write a special message for their Grandparents to accompany their entry.

Voicing her support for the competition, Cherie Booth said: "Grandparent's Day is the day to show how much they mean to your family. Many grandparents and children genuinely enjoy each other's company and spend significant time together. This competition provides children with a great opportunity to express how much they love their grandparents."

There are around 13 million grandparents in the UK and a third of the population will become grandparents by the time they reach 50. This research shows that grandparents are playing an ever increasing role in family life.

Gordon Lishman, Age Concern's Director General, said: "Grandparents perform a vital role in children's lives - whether it's listening to their grandchildren's problems, caring for them or just making them laugh. Grandparents are much loved in their families, and they deserve their special day as much as Mums and Dads."

Regional finalists will be announced on Monday, 11 September. These cards will be shown on Age Concern's Grandpartent's Day online gallery. The national winner will be revealed on Wednesday, 20 September.
