New Book Packs for Deaf Children

New Book Packs for Deaf Children

Bookstart is launching a new addition called ‘Bookshine’. It is to help parents of deaf babies and children discover books together.

Bookstart is the national programme that encourages all parents and carers to enjoy books with children from as early an age as possible, to encourage every child in the UK to develop a lifelong love of books. Bookstart has worked closely with NDCS to ensure that its new range will cater for the needs of deaf babies and children. The books and accompanying guidance materials for parents and carers have been chosen in partnership with the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) and parents of deaf children.

Any parent or carer of a deaf child aged 0-4 years is entitled to a free Bookshine pack and should receive it automatically and in addition to the Bookstart, Bookstart+ or My Bookstart Treasure Chest pack. The new pack will contain two free board books, a guide to sharing books with a deaf child, a recommended booklist and a nursery rhyme place mat. Parents should ask their health visitor, local library or nursery about how to receive the Bookshine pack.

Lorna Simpson, NDCS Development Manager, explains: “All babies and children should be given the opportunity to learn about the joys of reading. Bookshine, the Bookstart range specifically selected with the needs of deaf babies and children in mind is a wonderful collection. The books all have colourful illustrations and some have different textures to touch and feel. Deaf children often learn in a very visual way and encouraging an interest in books at an early age can be crucial in development”.

Alex Strick, Bookstart Consultant, adds: “Bookstart is for every child. We are very proud to be expanding our existing Bookstart range by offering parents of deaf children a selection of specially chosen books. Thanks to our partnerships with specialists such as the NDCS, we are confident that the new Bookshine pack will provide many more families with the impetus and advice they need to help their children enjoy books from an early age."; Source: National Deaf Children's Society
