Enthusiastic families with deaf children are invited to join a Signing Choir organised by the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS). This project will bring together 15 deaf children and their families to learn songs in British Sign Language.
Beginners and fluent BSL users are welcome and rehearsals which started on Wednesday 23 January 2008 at Wilton House for four weeks. There will be a final performance on Wednesday 20 February in Castlecourt Shopping Centre, Belfast.
The facilitators will inspire the group to learn a number of modern signed songs over the course of the project. Children that play musical instruments are also invited to help develop the choir.
Stacey McStay, NDCS NI Arts Officer explains: “This is an exciting opportunity for local families with deaf children to have fun and make some music! Many young deaf people find it difficult to participate in out of school activities because they are not set up to provide good communication. Arts projects like this are crucial for deaf children as deafness makes it harder for them to communicate which can be very isolating. The children and families involved in the signing choir will have a chance to meet people with similar interests as well as gaining a whole range of new skills.”
This is an interpreted project open to deaf children over 6 years of age and their families.
