With the debate on access to education for disabled children ever growing, Alison Seabeck, the Labour MP for Plymouth Devonport, is to meet Scope's Inclusion Team to discuss how the issues are being addressed in the region.

Alison Seabeck commented: "My forthcoming meeting with Scope's Inclusion team is a great opportunity for me to offer my ongoing support to an organisation that is committed to achieving equality for disabled people.”

Scope is a national disability organisation whose focus is people with cerebral palsy. The team based in Plymouth is dedicated to providing disabled children access to education, sporting and social activities alongside their non-disabled peers.

Andrew Mullen, Head of the Scope Inclusion Team, said: "The team was set up in November 2005. We are now receiving at least two referrals a week and are rapidly becoming the provider of choice for children with complex and multiple needs in Cornwall and West Devon.”

Mullen added: "Our meeting with Alison Seabeck is part of an ongoing process by Scope to get education for disabled people on the political agenda. Scope believes in high-quality education for disabled and non-disabled children alike. To achieve this means bringing together the right combination of personal support, a curriculum focussed on achievement, and supporting disabled children to be part of their community.”

The team has quickly established itself as a model of good practice and has seen success in the region. For example, a specialist advice and training has been provided to a primary school with a special unit and sensory room for disabled children and plans are being put in place to support a young boy with high dependency needs in a remote area of Devon.
