Theatres: Captioned and Signed Performances in London

Theatres: Captioned and Signed Performances in London

At this meeting SOLT reaffirmed its commitment not only to ensuring that there are regular signed performances in all the West End's 40 Theatres, but also to ensure that popular long-running shows have more than one signed performance during their run.

The DRC has also clarified that theatres DO have a legal responsibility under the Disability Discrimination Act to provide both Captioned performances AND Signed performances. Theatres cannot argue that they have made reasonable provision just by providing captions for one group at the expense of BSL users - provision must be made for the needs of all groups of disabled people. SPIT welcomes this news for Deaf and hearing-impaired Theatregoers with different needs.
